New Pixel Bender for MAX!

Published by mac0002 under adobe

Hey everybody! I’ve been laying a bit low for a little while because the team has been heads-down preparing for MAX and polishing our latest releases.

It seems crazy that only around a year ago we first announced Pixel Bender publicly! At that time we were only taking about Flash, although we had been working to make Pixel Bender plug-ins work with After Effects and Photoshop (John Nack had an excellent hint on his blog that day). This year, we’re doing a 90 minute lab on Pixel Bender every day and there are two additional Pixel Bender sessions from the Flash developer community! I’ll also be doing the lab twice in Milan at MAX Europe.

Tonight, we posted a new release of the Pixel Bender Toolkit, version 1.1. This version is newer than the one that shipped with CS4. There are some bug fixes and a great developer guide and reference put together by the developer documentation team. Also included is the promised Pixel Bender command-line compiler, PBUtil. Those of you using other tools or looking to automate your Pixel Bender workflows can use it, and those who want to create 3rd party tools can use it for both kernel and bytecode compatibility.

The most important release tonight is the Pixel Bender Plug-in for Photoshop Cs4. It supports both Pixel Bender kernels and Graphs and is accelerated for both GPUs and multi-core CPUs.

You can now use the same Pixel Bender filter in Photoshop, After Effects and Flash!

All of these releases are now available from our new labs page:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/pixelbender/

Don’t forget:
The Pixel Bender Exchange: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=productHome&exc=26&loc=en_us
the Pixel Bender Forum: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/categories.cfm?forumid=72&catid=661&entercat=y
Pixel Bender on Twitter: http://twitter.com/pixelbender

For those at MAX SF: Brian Ronan, Bob Archer and I are will be at the Meet The Team session for the Flash team tomorrow night. Come by and say hi or find us in the halls of Moscone or the Marriot! We always want to find out what folks are doing with Pixel Bender! Unfortunately, all of the labs are full, but we will post our content after all the MAXes are over.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse

Published by mac0002 under adobe

Photoshop® CS3 Extended Plug-in for Google 3D Warehouse is a free plug-in that enables you to search and download 3D models from Google 3D Warehouse™ directly from Adobe® Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Once you have downloaded the plug-in, you can search Google 3D Warehouse from Photoshop CS3 Extended by going to File>Automate>Search Google for 3D Model. For more information on using the plug-in or the 3D capabilities in Photoshop CS3 Extended, see the Getting Started section below.

Downloads and Installation Instructions
The Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse is pre-release software. It has only been tested using an English operating system with an English version of Photoshop CS3 Extended. There may be bugs or other unknown issues. There is no installer for this plug-in —you must manually place the plug-in into the Photoshop plug-ins folder.

Please follow the instructions for your platform below.

Macintosh Download & Installation Instructions
Note: This plug-in is not compatible with Leopard 10.5

Please follow the instructions below.

Ensure that you have Photoshop CS3 Extended installed.
Close all applications, including Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Download the Photoshop CS3 Extended Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse
Double click on the DMG file. There are two plugin files, a Read Me file, and a short-cut link to the Photoshop File Formats Plug-Ins folder on your hard drive inside the DMG.
Select BOTH the Google3D.plugin and KMZ.plugin files. Drag them both to the shortcut folder titled “File Formats” (Note, this method only works for English versions of Photoshop CS3 Extended). Or, navigate to the File Formats plug-in folder manually and drag both plugin files into this folder: Applications>Adobe Photoshop CS3>Plug-Ins> File Formats.
You will be asked whether you want to replace an existing KMZ.plugin file — click “Replace”.
Close the Photoshop Plug-Ins folder.
Launch Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Go to File>Automate>Search Google for 3D Model.
Windows Download & Installation Instructions
Please follow the instructions below.

If you are using Vista operating system, you should run Photoshop and this plug-in as an administrator. If you do not have administrator control, then you will need to turn User Account Control OFF and restart your computer before installing this plug-in. To access UAC settings, go to Control Panel > User Account and Family Safety > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on or off. See Known Issues section below for more information on using this plug-in on Vista.
Ensure that you have Photoshop CS3 Extended installed.
Close all applications, including Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Download the Photoshop CS3 Extended Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse. There are two files: a plug-in file named Google3D.8BI and a read me file.
Navigate to the File Formats plug-in folder on your computer C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\File Formats.
Manually drag the Google3D.8BI file into this folder and close the folder.
Launch Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Go to File>Automate>Search Google for 3D Model.
For Vista users, if you do not have administrator control, you will need to keep UAC turned off in order to use the plug-in. For Vista users with administrator control, the plug-in will function properly with UAC turned on or off.
Getting Started
Using the Plug-In
Once you have the Plug-In installed, you can search Google 3D Warehouse for 3D models by going to File>Automate>Search Google for 3D Model in Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Enter your search term and press the search button.
Navigate through the search results and select a model you’d like to download to Photoshop.
Click on the link to go to the larger view of the model. Click the “Get Model” button. Then, in the save dialog box, choose where you want to save the model to your computer.
After saving the file, the plug-in will convert the 3D model into a format that Photoshop reads (in this case KMZ, Photoshop also supports .3ds, .obj, .dae and .u3d) and then the model will open in Photoshop CS3 Extended as a 3D layer.
NOTE: If you try to open a large 3D model (over 5MB for the zipped file shown on 3D Warehouse), the conversion & opening process will be very slow. We recommend downloading models under 5 MB on Google 3D Warehouse.

In order to access the translation & rotation capabilities in Photoshop CS3 Extended, double-click on the cube icon in the 3D Layer Thumbnail, or go to Layers>3D Layers> Transform 3D Model. In the options bar, you will see both an object mode as well as a camera mode - as well as translation & rotation tools. Pressing Shift while dragging your mouse in one direction will limit any of these tools to a single axis. There are also lighting modes, render modes and a cross section tool that is accessible from the options bar within the 3D Transform tool. In order to exit the 3D Transform Tool, press enter, or click the check mark in the upper right hand corner of the options bar.

Texture Editing

You can edit the textures of 3D models using any of Photoshop image editing or painting capabilities. To access the textures, you want to exit out of the 3D transform tool. In the Layers palette, you will see sublayers under the 3D layer. Each of these sublayers is a texture. In order to open a texture, simply double-click on it. This will open a child-document that is pixels. You can edit this document using any tools in Photoshop. In order to update your changes onto the 3D model, simply close or save the texture file. Your edits will update on the 3D model. If you want to update your texture changes to your original texture files where you have saved them on your hard drive, go to Layers >3D Layers>Replace Textures. Photoshop will save over your original textures with the modified texture files from Photoshop. If you open your original 3D file in a program such as Sketch-up, you will see your texture edits.

Known Issues
Known Issues for Macintosh
Not compatible with Leopard 10.5
Cannot load some models with Cyrillic or double-byte characters. In some cases, Photoshop cannot load models with Cyrillic or double-byte characters that can be downloaded via Google Earth.
Mismatched models on PowerPC. In some cases on Power PC machines, a model downloaded directly from Google 3D Warehouse does not match the same model downloaded via the Photoshop Plug-in for Google 3D Warehouse.
Blank or corrupted textures. You may see blank or corrupted textures when a model opens in Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Known Issues for Windows
For Vista, User AccountControl (UAC) should be turned off for users who do not have administrator control. If you do not have administrator level control, the plug-in will not install or run properly with Vista UAC controls on. You will need to turn UAC off. To access UAC settings, go to Control Panel > User Account and Family Safety > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on or off. For users running Photoshop as administrator, the plug-in will install and run properly with UAC on.
Cannot load some models with Cyrillik or double-byte characters. In some cases, Photoshop cannot load models with Cyrillik or double-byte characters that can be downloaded via Google Earth.
Blank or corrupted textures. You may see blank or corrupted textures when a model opens in Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Browser back button does not work for second session. If you download a model from Google 3D Warehouse and then relaunch the plug-in, the previous arrow is disabled. On the Macintosh, you can return to the previously opened page.

Flex Gumbo SDK Release NotesAbout Flex Gumbo SDK
The Flex SDK provides a highly productive, open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops and operating systems. It provides a modern, standards-based language and programming model that supports common design patterns suitable for developers from many backgrounds. Flex applications run in the ubiquitous Adobe® Flash® Player and Adobe® AIR™.

You can use the Flex SDK to create a wide range of highly interactive, expressive applications. For example, a data visualization application built in Flex can pull data from multiple back-end sources and display it visually. Business users can drill down into the data for deeper insight and even change the data and have it automatically updated on the back end. A product configuration application can help customers navigate the process of selecting or customizing products online. And a self-service application can guide customers through an address change or help employees complete an otherwise complicated multi-step benefits enrollment.

In addition to the Open Source Flex SDK, Adobe produces the Free Adobe Flex SDK which contains everything in the Open Source Flex SDK plus useful tools for enhancing the application development experience such as the debugger Adobe Flash Player runtime and Adobe AIR. Adobe also provides a professional IDE, Adobe Flex Builder, for building Flex applications using either the Adobe Flex SDK or the Open Source Flex SDK. Goals

The Flex SDK installation is delivered as a ZIP file and contains the Flex framework, Adobe AIR framework, and command-line tools, such as the mxmlc command-line utility, Adobe AIR command-line utility, the ASDoc utility, the Flex command-line debugger, and the debugger version of Flash Player.

Uninstall Current Flash Player

You should use Flex SDK with the latest version of the debug Flash Player 9, so prior to installing the Flex SDK, you should uninstall your current Flash Player

Windows-Plugin-based browsers

Run the appropriate uninstaller available from here

Macintosh

Run the appropriate uninstaller available from here

Linux

Manual removal (for users who installed the plug-in via Install script):

Delete the libflashplayer.so binary and the flashplayer.xpt file in directory /home/<user>/.mozilla/plugins/
RPM removal:

1. As root, enter the following command:
# rpm -e flash-plugin
2. Click Enter and follow the prompts.
Install the Flex SDK

Download Flex SDK ZIP file from the Adobe Flex SDK Open Source Site: http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Download+Flex+4.
Create a directory to contain Flex SDK
Extract the Flex SDK ZIP file to this directory. The Flex SDK contains the following directories:
/ant — Contains Flex Ant Tasks.
/asdoc — Contains helper files for the ASDoc tool that creates HTML documentation from your MXML and ActionScript source code.
/bin — Contains the mxmlc, compc, asdoc, and fdb utilities. The bin directory also contains the jvm.config file, which specifies Java settings that you can modify, if necessary.
/frameworks — Contains compiled framework classes, configuration files, and framework source code.
/lib — Contains JAR files used by the utilities.
/runtimes — Contains installers for the Adobe AIR runtime inside the air directory and installers for debug versions of Flash Player 9 inside the player directory.
/samples — Contains sample applications.
/templates — Contains HTML templates for Flash Player detection and browser integration and inside the air folder, a sample Adobe AIR application.xml file.
Ensure that the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is installed on the computer and that the java_home/bin directory is defined in the system path. JRE 1.4, 1.5, or 1.6 is required. For 1.4, JRE 1.4.2_06 or later is required.
Install the appropriate debug Flash Player from the install_root/runtimes/player/platform directory.
(Optional) When the Flash Player installation finishes, restart your computer to ensure that the updated Flash Player browser plug-in is enabled.
Continue by reviewing the explorer sample. To run the explorer sample, you must first compile it running the install_root/samples/explorer/build.bat (Windows) or install_root/samples/explorer/build.sh (UNIX and Mac OS X) files. For more information on the Flex compilers, see the “Using the Flex Compilers” chapter in the Building and Deploying Flex Applications manual.
Compatibility Issues
Any Flex 3 applications being compiled with Gumbo should change their target player to 10.0.0.
In Flex 4, the filter tags use Flex filters (mx.filters) instead of the Flash filters (flash.filters). The GradientBevelFilter, GradientFilter and GradientGlowFilter have an array property called ‘entries’ which contain GradientEntry instances. GradientEntry has color, ratio, and alpha properties.
Anytime a user changes scale on UIComponent there will be slight Flex3 vs. Flex4 difference in positioning/sizing due to rounding errors. While the difference is tiny, you may notice a difference in text anti-aliasing.
All single binding expressions in Flex 3 that used ‘@{expr}’ will become two-way binding.
You can no longer bind ‘name’ in a State (e.g. <mx:State name=”{LOGIN_ERROR_STATE}”> ). The behavior was changed to support the new States model in Flex 4 where the name value behaves like ‘id’ and is used at compile time so it can’t be something that gets set at runtime.
Player 10 now supports changing the alpha of text. Therefore, effects like Fade on text work without having to embed fonts.
Gumbo supports AIR 1.5. For any AIR compatibility issues, please visit their release notes
Known Issues
Deep Linking
SDK-16697 Deep linking does not work when running an Application in Google Chrome.
Effects
SDK-17845 Calling mx.effects.Effect.captureStartValues(), then setting styles to the target, prior to calling .play() can result in behavior where the first invocation of play() will end with the target displaying the styled values. The next calling of .play() will result in the expected end-effect values. This behavior repeats the toggle indefinitely. Workaround is not to call .captureStartValues() directly, or do not set values between that call and the invocation of .play().
New Gumbo effects do not support old ‘Triggers’ functionality. Workaround - Gumbo effects can be launched either through state transitions or by calling play() on them manually.
Old effects cannot animate GraphicElement and some other Gumbo objects. Workaround - New effects were created specifically to animate Gumbo objects in addition to all of the old objects (and arbitrary targets as well). Use the new effects where possible. In some cases, such as MaskEffect and some of its subclasses, old effects have no equivalent in the new Gumbo effects, so you may need to use a different effect (consider FxAnimate, which is for animating arbitrary properties).
Fx
FxList – The FxList is not programmatically focusable with list.setFocus(); Workaround - You can set focus to the list skin directly once initialized (list.skin.setFocus()).
FxList – When databound to a simple collection consisting of String instances, if there are any duplicate strings in the collection (duplicates), they will not be displayed in the list. Workaround - Use Objects instead of Strings (so that each instance is unique), and use a custom renderer.
FxList – No labelField property on the list component. Workaround - Custom item renderer is required.
FxTextInput – Missing ‘displayAsPassword’, ‘maxChars’, and restrict functionality.
FxAnimateFilter – Only works when ‘target’ is an IStyleClient.
FxRadioButtons - FxRadioButtons don’t work w/ existing (Halo) RadioButtonGroup. A Spark FxRadioButtonGroup is not yet implemented. Workaround - Developers will have to manage mutual exclusivity among FxRadioButtons of the same group on their own (or else use Halo RadioButtons, with Halo RadioButtonGroups, but note that the RadioButtonGroup must go inside a Declarations tag if used in an FxApplication).
Gumbo Components
SDK-17285 Gumbo: Application - Focus does not work correctly for components that draw off-screen in Internet Explorer. Button, RadioButton, CheckBox, and Sliders draw shadows into the “negative territory.” If these components are placed at (0,0), they won’t correctly be picked up when tabbing to switch the focus. The workaround is to either move the component so it’s not at (0,0) anymore and doesn’t draw anything off-screen, or to change the component skins and create a custom skins that doesn’t draw shadows starting at (-1, -1).
SDK-17281 Gumbo: Group - When placing items in a Group, if the total width or height of the items exceeds the width or height of the Group, tabbing to the items may result in the focus ring being get cut off. To workaround this issue, explicitly set the height & width of the Group to be larger than the total width and height of the items in the Group.
SDK-17723 Gumbo: Slider - HSlider and VSlider thumbs get reset to zero after changing states.
SDK-17747 Gumbo: TextArea - Changing states clears the text value of an FxTextArea.
Keyboard Interaction
The keyboard interaction in List will change extensively post-MAX. What we have is basic support, but after MAX we will be designing a notification system where layout/scrolling/components all use some common API’s to control keyboard navigation.
Multiple selection and keyboard navigation full support will come in post-MAX. What is in the MAX build is some basic functionality that is prototype behavior, which will not hold up in all usage cases. Additionally, drag and drop and full-support for virtualization in List is post-MAX as well.
Layout
HGroup, VGroup, VerticalLayout, HorizontalLayout – No vertical or horizontal alignment attributes. No padding. Workaround - If you need to center or justify a child element, you can use a Group parent with horizontalCenter, left, or right attributes to fix position a child within the parent Group.
States
SDK-17395 The presence of <mx:Array> within <mx:states> will cause a compiler error. See bug SDK-17395.
Styles
SDK-17358 In CSS, when using an id selector without a type selector, styles are not passed onto sub components (e.g. the drop down of a ComboBox).
Lack of Styleability – Our stock Spark skins are a bit inflexible as it relates to “styleability”. It would be nice to declare several buttons, and just tweak the color of one of them with a simple inline style — or to be able to set the stroke width, color, or background color of other components..but the functionality is just not there. Workaround is to create a full blown replacement skin for the alternate style you are looking for.
Themes
SDK-17416 -Setting an Application’s themeColor at runtime with the StyleManager does not affect the rollOverColor of components. Workaround: Set the themeColor in the Application’s MXML instead. e.g. <mx:Application xmlns:mx=”http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml” themeColor=”haloGreen”>
Transitions
SDK-17809 -Halo Move effect doesn’t work within a Halo Transition.
Unspecified
SDK-17837 App Model - SWF projects with fixed dimensions are now horizontally centered in default HTML page. This behavior is different than Flex 3.
Versioning
SDK-17027 When loading an untrusted swf into a SWFLoader, you will get a Security Violation in your log when running in Debug mode.
SDK-16541 Opening a Tree node causes a stack overflow when the Tree is in a compatible child. The workaround is to put an instance of a List component in your main application.
SDK-17036 There is a bug that does not allow two Sandboxed child applications to run side by side. To get around this put each swf in its own ‘level’ using nested SWFLoaders.
SDK-17096 When you use multiple Sandboxed SWFLoaders and a PopUpMenuButton is present, components with pop ups don’t work (e.g. ColorPicker, DateField, ComboBox)
